DAO Treasury Management
DAO treasury management — custody, investment policy, asset diversification, Safe multisig, operational budgeting, and Swiss tax considerations for DAO treasuries.
DAO Treasury Management
The top twenty DAOs collectively hold over ten billion dollars in treasury assets. Managing that capital — custodying it securely, diversifying it prudently, deploying it operationally, and accounting for it transparently — is one of the most consequential and underanalysed aspects of the DAO ecosystem.
Most DAO treasuries began as concentrated positions in the DAO’s own governance token: issued at genesis, locked in a timelock, and initially worth little. As governance tokens appreciated, many DAO treasuries found themselves holding assets worth hundreds of millions or billions — almost entirely in a single token perfectly correlated with the protocol’s own success or failure.
The maturation of DAO treasury management has moved in one consistent direction: diversification into stablecoins and blue-chip assets, formalised investment policy frameworks, professional custody via Safe multisig, and increasingly sophisticated approaches to generating yield from otherwise idle assets. Switzerland features prominently in this infrastructure: Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe) is Zug-based, and the Swiss legal wrappers that govern major protocol foundations shape how treasuries are structured, taxed, and governed.
This section covers the full scope of DAO treasury management: custody architecture, investment policy design, stablecoin strategy, DeFi yield deployment, grants program management, and the Swiss regulatory and tax implications for DAO-held assets.
